Can global models ignore the chemical composition of aerosols?

چکیده
[1] The number of cloud droplets formed from a population of aerosols depends on the aerosol number concentration, NA, the size distribution, and the chemical composition. The cloud albedo effect occurs when increasing NA causes increases to the droplet concentration, ND. We examined the effects of changing aerosol size, composition, and number on ND within the United States. We found that changing the water‐soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction from 50% to 0.05% in the fine mode aerosol and from 50% to 95% in the coarse mode aerosol decreased ND by an average of 34%. Our results show that the changes to the aerosol composition cause over a 20% change to ND, a magnitude previously estimated to cause a 1 W m change in radiative forcing. Given the realistic range of aerosol compositions used here, it is not possible for global models to correctly calculate the cloud albedo effect if composition is ignored. Citation: Roesler, E. Nitric acid scavenging by mineral and biomass burning aerosols
The abundance of gas phase nitric acid in the upper troposphere is overestimated by global chemistry-transport models, especially during the spring and summer seasons. Recent aircraft data obtained over the central US show that mineral aerosols were abundant in the upper troposphere during spring. Chemical reactions on mineral dust may provide an important sink for nitric acid. In regions where...
متن کاملApplication of the Genetic Algorithm to Calculate the Interaction Parameters for Multiphase and Multicomponent Systems
A method based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) was developed to study the phase behavior of multicomponent and multiphase systems. Upon application of the GA to the thermodynamic models which are commonly used to study the VLE, VLLE and LLE phase equilibria, the physically meaningful values for the Binary Interaction Parameters (BIP) of the models were obtained. Using the method proposed in t...
متن کاملThe impact of detailed urban‐scale processing on the composition, distribution, and radiative forcing of anthropogenic aerosols
[1] Detailed urban‐scale processing has not been included in global 3D chemical transport models due to its large computational demands. Here we present a metamodel for including this processing, and compare it with the use of the traditional approach of dilution of emissions into large grid boxes. This metamodel is used in a global 3D model to simulate the effects of cities around the world on...

Aerosols are among the most important of atmospheric pollutants observed like the microscopic particulate matter in the lower parts of the troposphere. The main purpose of this study is introducing a new method based on satellite images processing results and nonlinear analysis (fractal based) to investigate the origin and dynamical mechanism of aerosols distribution in North Africa and the Mid...

Aerosol microphysics, chemical composition, and CCN properties were measured on the Department of Energy Gulfstream-1 aircraft during the Marine Stratus/Stratocumulus Experiment (MASE) conducted over the coastal waters between Point Reyes National Seashore and Monterey Bay, California, in July 2005. Aerosols measured during MASE included free tropospheric aerosols, marine boundary layer aerosol...
